Getting to Austin
Austin
has a major airport (Austin Bergstrom International Airport). Rental
cars are available at the airport or you can use SuperShuttle to get to
your hotel. It is about a three hour drive from Houston, Dallas, or
Fort Worth.
Wedding Registry
In lieu of gifts, we would like to encourage our friends and
relatives to make a contribution to charity on our behalf. Two that
we have selected are the American
Cancer Society, a group that funds extensive research on the
prevention and elimination of cancer, and SafePlace. a
shelter for survivors of domestic or sexual violence in Austin,
Texas.
Things to do in Austin
We know that many of you will be visiting Austin (and Texas!) for the
very first time. If you find yourself with time to spare, here are a
few of our favorite things to do in the area.
- The Broken
Spoke - It's an Austin legend. Drink some Lone Stars.
- Zilker Park
- Go jogging or walking at the hike and bike trail! Peep through the
keyhole window at the Botanical
Garden. Ride the train.
- Barton
Springs - While she was growing up, Annelies spent many
happy summer afternoons at this natural, spring-fed pool.
- Alamo Drafthouse
- Get a burger and a beer while you watch a new release at what may be
the greatest movie theater ever created!
- Congress
Avenue Bat Colony
- Over a million Mexican free-tail bats live under the bridge at
Congress Avenue for most of the year. They all come out at dusk to feed
on insects, helping clear the air over Austin. It's quite a sight!
- Peter
Pan Mini Golf
- If the weather's nice you can't do better than 9 holes of mini golf
perhaps followed by an old-school frozen custard rootbeer float down
the street at Sandy's.
- Spider House
-
Quite possibly the most incredible coffee house you'll ever visit.
Nancee recommends the spider bite—a shot of espresso over a scoop
of
Amy's ice cream.
- LBJ Library and
Museum - See exhibits from the life and times of Texas's
last good president.
- The
Whole Foods Flagship
- That's right, it all started here in ATX in a little store that
smelled like vitamins. Sure it's just like every other Whole Foods
you've been to, but you get the social cache of saying you've been to
the original!
- The University of Texas
- Austin's only professional sports team and a great place to learn
too. The Drag is just to the west of the campus and has lots of cool
shops and eateries, including Veggie Heaven,
one of our favorites.
And if you have your own Transportation:
- Enchanted
Rock - In the mood for a climb? Visit the second largest
granite dome in the U.S. It's big and pink and has a great view.
- Fredericksburg
- Central Texas has embraced (and capitalized on) its considerable
German heritage—and no where more successfully than
Fredericksburg.
It's super cute, great for antiquing, and has its own open air Pioneer Museum.
- Greune
- a cute country town on the river with antique shops and artisan
vendors.
- San
Antonio - See the Alamo
and eat at the River
Walk.
